As many local residents will have seen over the years, a few days before any festival or big event in Overton, the bunting 'appears', as if by magic, down the whole length of Bridge Street. It is a stunning site which has accompanied every Sheep Fair and Scarecrow Festival.
Members of the committee were pleased to represent the Overton Business Association (OBA) at the Overton Scarecrow Festival on Saturday 14th July. The stall was covered in prizes donated by many OBA members and the tombola was a great success with those attending the festival. The winners were very grateful for the generous prizes that were on offer from local businesses, and we have since heard that some have been directly in touch with the businesses themselves to say thank you!
If enough businesses and groups will commit, Overton can apply for 'Plastic Free Status'. This will be great not only environmentally but for publicity, encouraging press and media coverage, as well as tourism. We are plastic bag free already, after a very successful campaign 11 years ago, so there is no reason not to take this one step further.
We are delighted to hear that OBA member Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants have won gold at this year's Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show. In fact, it is their 23rd gold medal! Congratulations to Rob and Rosy, and all of the nursery's staff.
Following last week's announcement that OBA members, The Artizans, Overton Gallery and Caviste, had been nominated for the 'Muddy Stilettos (Hampshire) Annual Awards', we are delighted to let you know that both Overton Gallery and Caviste were the winners in their respective categories of 'Best Gift Shop' and 'Best Wine Merchant'. Congratulations to them both!
Muddy Stilettos Hampshire calls itself 'The urban guide to the countryside' and offers an online collection of articles about local events and news, as well as a directly of businesses. Last year, they launched their annual Awards to celebrate local businesses and today the finalists were announced for 2018.
The Overton Coffee Shop are excited to announce that they will be holding a 'Cookery Doodle Doo' session, run by Katie Black, and are inviting all local toddlers to attend. The 'Tots Cookery Session' will take place on Thursday 10th May from 9:30am at the back of the coffee shop, at 2C High Street, and will last approximately 30 minutes.
We were saddened to hear yesterday that beauty salon, Truly Scrumptious, is to close on 1st June 2018. They announced on their Facebook page that whilst the business has grown, since opening in 2015, they have not been able to make it an ongoing viable location due to customer numbers and rising costs.
